DIY: Children's Christmas Creations in Shadowboxes

My kids are currently 10, 12 and 15.  They're growing so fast and with the exception of the "baby" not as many holiday art pieces are being produced.  Libby goes to middle school next year so this year marks the end of a parenting era for me.  Let's face it, the landslide of cute hand-print reindeer, cutout snowflakes and cotton ball snowmen; have their place in elementary school but not in middle school unless they do their crafting at home.

When I got out the boxes of decorations this year, I struggled with what to do with the sweet presents and cards the kids have made us over the years.  I always intend to display them but I'm kinda worried about what the dogs would do to them if one of them got a hold of them!  In the past, I've incorporated them into a crafty wreath.  It was cute but the whole thing was held together with Velcro and when someone would walk by, something would become unattached and fall into doggy territory!  :(

This year, as I was cleaning up, I decided to cheer up my-next-Christmas-self and put everything into shadow boxes!  When I decorate in December 2013, it'll be a treat to hang them up and remember when I was the mommy of three little ones with little hands that lovingly made us glittery presents in class!

I started with three of these cabinets, I found at a local craft and frame store.  I got a deal on them because they were on sale and then they marked them down for me because the only ones left has some blemishes.  Really, not a big deal because the edges are sanded to make it more shabby, anyway.

Be sure to get the kind of shadowbox with the foam core back so you can hang and arrange everything with pins.

Arrange as you wish and then push straight pins into the art to hold it in place!

The result:  Safe storage of your children's creations that can be enjoyed every holiday!  I think it'll be fun for their kids to see when Sandman and I are blessed with grandkids!

A sweet set of three!  Left to right:  Libby, Vannie and Mariner (sorry, had to brag!)

Currently, they are sitting in the attic for next year!  Now that I'm all cleaned up from the holidays; I'm excited for Christmas again!  :)

xoxoxo,
Cindy

  1. Hey, that's a great idea!! Stopping by from the Bloggy Mommy's hop.

We always have tons of 'artwork' sitting around here. I do have limited wall space though.
